Sullivan County
Sullivan County was created from Ulster County in 1809, with Monticello becoming its county seat. Its name honors John Sullivan, whose Revolutionary War campaign devastated Haudenosaunee communities, a history that should not be separated from the namesake. During the twentieth century, the county became associated with the hotels and resorts of the Borscht Belt. That later cultural history adds another layer to a Catskill landscape with a much longer and more complex past.
Monticello, Liberty, Bethel, and Callicoon offer different starting points within Sullivan County. The Delaware River forms the southwestern boundary with Pennsylvania, while mountain terrain and part of Catskill Park shape other areas. The county’s resort legacy is one useful theme, but it is not the only one. A trip organized around a river community or a particular town can reveal local distinctions beyond the region’s widely recognized vacation history.
