Erie County

Created in 1821, Erie County is centered on Buffalo and the eastern shore of Lake Erie. The county grew through Great Lakes shipping, the Erie Canal, railroads, manufacturing, immigration, and border trade with Canada. Buffalo’s architecture, neighborhoods, civic institutions, industrial waterfront, and cultural landmarks anchor the region, while suburban and rural communities extend south and east toward farm country, forests, and county parks.

Visitors can combine museums, waterfront attractions, historic architecture, professional and minor-league sports, distinctive food traditions, and large public parks. The county park system includes more than 10,000 acres, with destinations such as Chestnut Ridge and Akron Falls. Buffalo provides the region’s main health care, education, airport, arts, and shopping services, while villages such as East Aurora and communities across the Southtowns offer a different pace.
